Accessible Website Design: A Practical Checklist for Business Teams

A practical accessibility checklist for clearer content, keyboard use, forms and responsive interfaces.

Accessibility begins with understandable content

Accessible design is not only about compliance tooling. Visitors need clear headings, descriptive links, readable text, predictable navigation and instructions that do not depend on colour alone. Good content structure also helps people scanning on small screens and visitors using assistive technology.

Make keyboard navigation predictable

Interactive controls should be reachable with a keyboard in a logical order. Focus indicators need to stay visible, menus should not trap focus and custom components should behave like the controls they replace. Test the primary navigation, forms, dialogs and key calls-to-action without using a mouse.

Protect readability across devices

Use sufficient text size, comfortable line height and strong contrast between text and background. Avoid placing long copy over busy images. Responsive layouts should reflow without horizontal scrolling, and zooming should not be disabled. A visitor should be able to understand the page on a small phone without precision tapping.

Design forms for recovery, not perfection

Every input needs a visible label. Required fields should be clear before submission, and validation messages should explain what needs to change. Preserve correctly entered data when another field has an error. Do not rely on placeholder text as the only label because it disappears as soon as a visitor starts typing.

Treat media as content

Images that communicate meaning need useful alternative text, while purely decorative images can usually have empty alternatives. Video should include captions when speech carries information. Avoid autoplaying audio and fast flashing effects. Motion should support the task rather than become a barrier to it.

Include accessibility in release checks

Automated scanners can find some issues, but they cannot judge whether navigation makes sense or whether instructions are understandable. Combine automated checks with keyboard testing, responsive review and a manual pass through important user journeys. Fixing recurring patterns in shared components creates more value than correcting isolated pages one at a time.
