Migration is a business change, not a server move
Moving workloads to cloud infrastructure can improve flexibility, deployment practices and resilience, but a lift-and-shift does not automatically deliver those benefits. Begin by identifying why the migration is happening: capacity, reliability, geographic reach, deployment speed, cost visibility or retirement of ageing infrastructure.
Inventory dependencies before designing the target
Map applications, databases, scheduled jobs, storage, external integrations, certificates, DNS and operational owners. Hidden dependencies are a common source of migration incidents. Decide which systems can move independently and which need coordinated cutovers.
Create a small, reversible first step
Start with a low-risk workload or supporting service. Use it to validate networking, identity, monitoring, backup, deployment and incident-response processes. A pilot reveals organizational gaps before critical customer systems depend on the new environment.
Automate repeatable infrastructure
Where practical, define infrastructure and deployment steps as code. Repeatable environments reduce configuration drift and make recovery easier. Automation should include guardrails: permissions, review, logging and a clear process for secrets.
Measure reliability and cost together
Cloud bills can increase when resources are oversized or left running without ownership. Tag resources, track usage, set budgets and connect cost to applications or teams. At the same time, monitor latency, errors, availability and capacity so cost optimization does not create reliability problems.
Plan the fallback before the cutover
Define acceptance checks, data synchronization approach, rollback triggers and who has authority to make the call. A migration plan is stronger when reversal is designed in advance rather than improvised during an outage.
